Opoku-Agyemang Urges Operators to Protect Government-Owned Buses

Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has called on transport operators and commuters to take proper care of government-owned buses, stressing that public transport assets belong to all citizens and must be protected.

She made the appeal amid growing concerns about a shortage of commercial vehicles, a situation that has led to overcrowding and, in some cases, the exploitation of passengers.

Speaking at a stakeholder engagement with management and staff of Metro Mass Transit Limited, the Vice President reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building an efficient, reliable and accessible public transport system across the country.

She urged Metro Mass staff to prioritise routine maintenance of buses, noting that good upkeep is essential to extending the lifespan of vehicles and sustaining quality service delivery. According to her, even older buses can remain roadworthy and productive if properly maintained.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang also assured operators of the government’s readiness to retool Metro Mass and provide additional buses to strengthen operations and ease pressure on commuters.

“Government is willing to play its role to retool Metro Mass and to supply more buses. Let us take good care of property that comes from government because that is all of us,” she said.
