Zenith Bank Ghana has been named Bank of the Year – Ghana at the 2025 edition of The Banker Awards in London, marking its sixth win and reinforcing its reputation as one of the country’s most consistently awarded financial institutions.
The accolade, conferred by The Banker magazine of the Financial Times Group, comes as the bank celebrates 20 years of operations in Ghana. Judges assessed banks across key indicators including capital strength, asset quality, profitability, cost efficiency, technological advancement, and innovation within a challenging regulatory and economic environment.
According to the awards panel, Zenith Bank Ghana distinguished itself through balance sheet stability, prudent risk management, and sustained investment in digital banking infrastructure. Particular attention was drawn to the bank’s September 2024 recapitalisation, which saw its stated capital rise from GH¢400 million to GH¢1 billion, funded entirely from retained earnings. The move strengthened investor confidence while preserving shareholder value.
The bank’s strategic partnerships with Development Bank Ghana, the African Guarantee Fund and the Mastercard Foundation’s Bridge-in Agriculture programme were also cited as key contributors to its strong performance. Under the agriculture initiative launched in May 2025, Zenith Bank Ghana disbursed GH¢22.2 million within its first month to businesses across the value chain.
Technology investments featured prominently in the assessment, with the adoption of the Calypso platform enhancing treasury and risk operations through real-time analytics and automation. The launch of Z-Transfer, a bulk payment solution for high-volume clients, further underscored the bank’s focus on efficiency and service excellence.
Managing Director and CEO, Henry Onwuzurigbo, described the award as a collective achievement that reflects staff dedication, customer trust, and regulatory support. He said the recognition serves as motivation to sustain high standards while deepening investment in technology, governance, and sectors critical to Ghana’s economic growth.
Zenith Bank Ghana previously won the award in 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2024, with its latest victory further cementing its standing as a stable and resilient force in Ghana’s financial landscape.
