Commuters faced hours-long delays on Monday morning after a tipper truck laden with sand overturned along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, causing massive traffic congestion and disrupting vehicular movement in both directions.
The incident, which occurred near the Berger axis at around 6:30 a.m., blocked multiple lanes of the busy expressway during peak travel hours. Eyewitnesses said the truck lost control while attempting to overtake another vehicle, resulting in its overturn and spilling sand across the road.
Emergency responders, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and the police, arrived on the scene to manage traffic flow and initiate clearance operations.
“We are working to evacuate the vehicle and restore normal traffic as quickly as possible,” said FRSC Sector Commander, Olusegun Ogungbemide. “Motorists are advised to take alternative routes and remain patient.”
The traffic jam extended several kilometers, leaving thousands of commuters stranded and businesses delayed. Some frustrated drivers reportedly abandoned their vehicles to continue their journeys on foot.
There were no immediate reports of fatalities, but several bystanders sustained minor injuries during the initial commotion, officials confirmed.
Authorities urged commercial drivers and logistics operators to ensure vehicle maintenance and adhere strictly to safety regulations to prevent future occurrences.
As of press time, clearance operations were still ongoing, with traffic flow gradually easing in some sections.
