Ghana Water Company to Launch Bottled Water Line Amid Rising Demand

In a strategic move to diversify its operations and meet growing consumer demand, the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has announced plans to enter the bottled water market.

The Managing Director of GWCL, Dr. Clifford Braimah, revealed the company’s new venture during a media briefing in Accra on [Insert Date], stating that the initiative is aimed at offering Ghanaians a safe, trusted, and competitively priced alternative in the bottled water sector.

“We believe the time is right for Ghana Water to expand into the bottled water space,” Dr. Braimah said. “As a utility that already provides treated water to millions, this is a natural extension of our mandate to supply safe and quality water to the public.”

He explained that the bottled water project will begin on a pilot basis, with production plants expected to be sited near major treatment facilities to minimize logistical costs and ensure quality control.

The move comes as Ghana experiences a surge in bottled water consumption due to urbanization, health awareness, and increased demand for convenient hydration solutions. Industry analysts estimate the country’s bottled water market to be worth hundreds of millions of cedis annually.

Dr. Braimah noted that Ghana Water’s entry into the market is not only commercially driven, but also part of a broader strategy to ensure water security and innovation within the utility sector.

“We intend to compete fairly with existing brands while adhering to the highest standards of safety, hygiene, and environmental sustainability,” he added.

The announcement has generated mixed reactions, with some praising the company’s forward-thinking approach while others caution that the core responsibility of GWCL—providing reliable piped water—should not be neglected.

Dr. Braimah assured the public that the new venture will not divert attention from the company’s core services, but rather enhance its financial sustainability and operational efficiency.

The bottled water products are expected to hit the market by the end of the year, pending regulatory approvals and finalization of infrastructure.
