Justice Atuguba Slams EC Over Refusal to Allow Forensic Audit of Voters’ Register

Former Supreme Court Justice William Anaam Atuguba has criticized the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana for refusing to allow an independent forensic audit of the voters’ register ahead of the 2024 general elections. He described the EC’s stance as “dictatorial” and contrary to constitutional principles.

In a recent interview, Justice Atuguba referenced Article 45 of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates the EC to compile and revise the voters’ register while ensuring public confidence in the electoral process. He questioned whether dismissing stakeholders’ concerns without transparent verification aligns with the Commission’s constitutional duties.

“The power of government resides in the people, and institutions like the EC must act in their best interest,” he asserted, emphasizing that an external audit would reinforce transparency and trust in the electoral system.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has also demanded an independent audit, citing anomalies in the voters’ register. However, the EC maintains that it has addressed these concerns internally and sees no need for external verification.

Justice Atuguba warned that failing to allow an audit could undermine public trust and electoral integrity. He urged the EC to reconsider its position, stressing that a transparent electoral process is fundamental to Ghana’s democracy.
