President Mahama Directs Finance Minister to Fund Phase II of Blekusu Sea Defence Project

Former President John Dramani Mahama has instructed the Finance Minister to allocate funding for the Phase II of the Blekusu Sea Defence Project in response to the increasing threats posed by rising sea levels and coastal erosion in the Volta Region.

The Blekusu Sea Defence Project aims to protect vulnerable coastal communities, including Keta, from the devastating impact of tidal waves and flooding. Following a recent tidal wave disaster in Keta, which left many families displaced, Mahama emphasized the urgency of completing the next phase of the project to safeguard the region’s residents and infrastructure.

In a statement issued earlier today, President Mahama underscored the importance of addressing the escalating environmental threats. “This project is crucial for the safety and well-being of the people of Keta and its surrounding communities. I have instructed the Finance Minister to ensure that the necessary funds are allocated promptly to begin Phase II of the project,” Mahama said.

The project’s first phase has already provided some relief, but the second phase is expected to significantly strengthen the coastal defenses, reducing the risk of future environmental disasters. Local leaders and residents have long called for a quicker response to the increasing vulnerability of the area due to rising tides and unpredictable weather patterns.

This announcement has been welcomed by local authorities, with many hopeful that the project will provide the much-needed protection for the region in the years to come. The government’s commitment to securing funding for the next phase marks a key step in addressing long-term coastal protection and ensuring the sustainability of the region’s communities.
