Kennedy Agyapong, Member of Parliament for Assin Central, has urged the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to acknowledge the current economic difficulties facing Ghana and offer a formal apology to the public as part of its campaign for the December 2024 General Elections.
Agyapong, speaking at the launch of the NPP Ablekuma South Constituency election campaign, emphasized that the party’s campaign message would be ineffective without first addressing and apologizing for the economic hardships experienced under its governance. “Let’s go out there with humility, apologize to Ghanaians, and admit your mistakes before you can convince anybody to vote for you,” Agyapong stated. He stressed that the party must first recognize the difficulties faced by Ghanaians before seeking their support.
The legislator highlighted the importance of unity within the party to secure victory in the upcoming elections. He reiterated his commitment to supporting the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in the electoral race. “We are all not going to sit back; we will all support Dr. Bawumia to win,” Agyapong asserted.
Known for his candid and sometimes controversial remarks, Agyapong has built a reputation for speaking bluntly, even when it involves critiquing his own party.
The NPP has been under scrutiny for its handling of the country’s economic challenges, with critics pointing to issues such as inflation and unemployment. The party attributes these difficulties to external factors like the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Despite these explanations, accusations of mismanagement have persisted.
As the 2024 General Elections approach, the NPP faces a critical campaign period. Dr. Bawumia, the Vice President and party’s flagbearer, is expected to lead the campaign efforts. Ensuring internal party cohesion and adopting a transparent approach to addressing the nation’s challenges are seen as crucial for the NPP’s success in the December polls.
