NPP Endorses Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as Running Mate for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

Accra – July 5, 2024 – The National Organiser of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has affirmed the qualifications of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, who has been selected as the running mate to the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the NPP has unanimously approved Dr. Opoku Prempeh, currently serving as the Energy Minister, for the vice-presidential position. The party emphasized that Dr. Opoku Prempeh meets all the necessary criteria, leading to his unanimous endorsement.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story with Samuel Kojo Brace, Henry Nana Boakye highlighted Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s exemplary performance in various roles. He pointed out that those who have worked with him praise his exceptional leadership.

“Yes, some people will have their own varied views, diverse opinions, but … this is somebody a lot of people see as a competent person. He is dedicated, and his commitment to whatever he sets his eyes on is huge,” Boakye stated on July 4.

Boakye, also known as Nana B, recalled a recent encounter at a market center where Dr. Opoku Prempeh, affectionately known as Napo, was warmly received by traders. They expressed their gratitude for the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy he implemented during his tenure as Education Minister, which enabled many of their children to attend school.

“When we went to Kumasi Central Market, he was hailed because he championed the implementation of Free SHS. There are a lot of people, the downtrodden, the destitute, who think that but for Free SHS, they could not have even wished for their kids to go to school,” Boakye added.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s track record in public service and his commitment to educational reforms have solidified his reputation as a capable leader. His selection as the running mate is expected to strengthen the NPP’s campaign and appeal to a broad spectrum of voters.

The NPP’s decision comes as the party gears up for the upcoming elections, with a focus on continuing its agenda for development and progress in Ghana. The endorsement of Dr. Opoku Prempeh is seen as a strategic move to bolster the party’s leadership team and enhance its prospects in the electoral contest.
