2025 AFCON Qualifiers Draw Today: Ghana’s Black Stars Seeded Among Top Nations

2025 AFCON Qualifiers Draw Set for Today in Johannesburg

Johannesburg, South Africa — The draw for the group stage of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, to be hosted in Morocco, will take place today, Thursday, July 4, 2024. The event will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, recently rose in the FIFA rankings from 14th to 12th on the continent, placing them among the top seeded nations ahead of the draw. Other top-seeded teams include hosts Morocco, AFCON holders Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Nigeria, Algeria, and Egypt, all placed in pot 1.

This seeding ensures that the Black Stars will not be grouped with these formidable teams in the qualifiers.

The draw will see the 48 participating teams divided into four pots of 12 based on their FIFA rankings. From these pots, teams will be drawn into 12 groups labeled A to L, each comprising four teams.

In groups excluding Morocco, the top two teams from each group will qualify for the AFCON. However, in the group containing Morocco, the host nation will automatically qualify along with one other team, regardless of their finishing position.

The qualifiers are scheduled to kick off in September later this year, marking the journey towards the 35th edition of the prestigious AFCON tournament.
