Richard Jakpa to Face Cross-Examination by Attorney General in Ambulance Trial

Today, Tuesday, June 18, marks a crucial juncture in the ongoing ambulance trial as businessman Richard Jakpa is scheduled to undergo cross-examination by the Attorney General (AG). This follows the completion of cross-examination by lawyers representing Dr. Ato Forson, the first accused, last Thursday, June 13.

While it remains uncertain whether the AG, Godfred Dame, will personally conduct the cross-examination in court, it is confirmed that the Prosecution will rigorously scrutinize Mr. Jakpa’s testimony. The trial, which has garnered significant public interest, hinges on allegations of financial misconduct in the procurement of ambulances.

Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, an additional High Court judge presiding over the case, called upon the Prosecution to proceed after Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson’s legal team, led by Dr. Abdul Basit Aziz Bamba, concluded their cross-examination last week.

Earlier in the trial, the Court admitted an audio recording into evidence. The recording captures a conversation between Godfred Dame and Richard Jakpa, who is the third accused in the case. This piece of evidence has added a layer of complexity to the proceedings.

Dr. Ato Forson, the current Minority Leader in Parliament, and businessman Richard Jakpa face allegations of deliberately causing financial loss to the state amounting to 2.37 million euros through the procurement of ambulances. Both defendants have pleaded not guilty and are currently standing trial.

The Prosecution’s examination of Mr. Jakpa is expected to be thorough and demanding, potentially lasting at least five hours. This aligns with the Case Management Completion plan, underscoring the trial’s meticulous approach to uncovering the details surrounding the alleged financial misconduct.

As the trial progresses, today’s cross-examination of Richard Jakpa by the Prosecution will be a pivotal moment, potentially influencing the direction and outcome of this high-profile case.
