Gallup Report Identifies Ghana as 4th Most Stressful Workplace in Sub-Saharan Africa

Ghana has been recognized as the 4th most stressful country for workers in Sub-Saharan Africa, according to Gallup’s 2023 State of the Global Workplace report.

The survey conducted by Gallup unveiled that Ghanaian workers face daily stress, positioning the country among the top stress-inducing work environments in the region.

Chad leads the list with workers experiencing the highest daily stress levels, followed by Uganda, Tanzania, and Sierra Leone. Ghana closely trails Sierra Leone, securing the fourth position as the most stressful country for workers in Sub-Saharan Africa.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, 46% of workers encounter daily stress, with almost identical percentages among male and female workers. Despite the region’s recovery from the peak of the pandemic, stress levels among employees remain alarmingly high.

The survey underscores the necessity for organizational leaders to address employee stress, as it significantly impacts productivity and performance. Gallup highlights the pivotal role of employee engagement in stress reduction, outweighing the influence of work location.

“While the debate regarding remote, hybrid, or on-site work persists, maintaining employee engagement remains paramount in alleviating stress levels. The flexibility afforded by remote work fosters autonomy and well-being, which are highly valued by today’s workforce,” noted Gallup in its survey.

Gallup conducts its surveys by collecting responses from 1,000 individuals in each country or area, utilizing a standard set of core questions translated into major local languages.

The data reflects the responses of employed adults aged 15 and above. The report stresses the significance of tackling workplace stress and promoting employee engagement to ensure a healthy and productive workforce in Sub-Saharan Africa.
