Renowned Musician and ‘Burga Highlife’ Pioneer, George Darko, Passes Away

The music world mourns the loss of George Darko, a legendary musician and pioneer of ‘Burga highlife,’ who reportedly passed away on Wednesday, March 20, 2024.

Mr. Darko, also known as Nana Apem Darko I, served as the Tufuhene of Akropong and made significant contributions to Ghanaian music as a guitarist, vocalist, composer, and songwriter since the late 1960s.

Throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, George Darko captivated audiences with his timeless and enduring highlife tracks. Songs such as “Akoo te brofo,” “Odo Colour,” and “Masem Nie” have left an indelible mark on Ghana’s music landscape, earning him widespread acclaim and recognition.
