Ghanaian Social Media Personality, Hajia4Reall, Pleads Guilty in $2M Romance Scam Case

Ghanaian social media sensation, Mona Faiz Montrage, widely known as Hajia4Reall, has entered a guilty plea in a $2 million romance scam case, according to the United States Attorney’s Office website. Hajia4Reall pleaded guilty to the charge of conspiracy to receive stolen money on February 21, with this offense carrying a maximum sentence of five years in prison. As part of the plea agreement, she has agreed to forfeit $2,164,758.41 and make restitution in the same amount. The sentencing is scheduled to be conducted by U.S. District Judge Paul A. Crotty at a later date.

United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Damian Williams, highlighted the severity of the romance scam, emphasizing that it victimized vulnerable, elderly individuals who discovered that their online romantic connections were fraudulent. Williams affirmed the commitment of law enforcement to bring perpetrators to justice, regardless of their location.

Hajia4Reall was extradited from the United Kingdom to the United States in May 2023, facing charges of wire fraud, money laundering, receipt of stolen money, and conspiracy to receive stolen money. Prosecutors alleged her involvement in a criminal enterprise based in Ghana that conducted romance scams targeting Americans from 2013 to 2019. The enterprise created fake identities to establish false romantic relationships with victims, convincing them to transfer money to accounts controlled by the criminals. Hajia4Reall, according to the prosecution, received over $2 million in fraudulent funds from victims of romance frauds orchestrated by the criminal enterprise.

Initially pleading not guilty, Hajia4Reall has now changed her plea to guilty, acknowledging her role in the romance scam. The guilty plea indicates her admission to knowingly receiving money stolen from older Americans through fraudulent activities. The United States Attorney’s Office, along with its law enforcement partners, remains steadfast in pursuing justice for victims of fraud, emphasizing the serious consequences individuals like Hajia4Reall will face for their actions.
