Bawku MCE Claims Deceased Men Engaged in Gunfight with Military

Amadu Hamza Zanga, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Bawku, stated that the three young men shot by soldiers were involved in a gunfight with the military. Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, the MCE mentioned that on the day of the incident, gunshots were heard, prompting him to inquire with the military commander stationed in the area. According to Mr. Zanga, he was informed that the deceased men had attacked the officers, leading to the military’s retaliation.

While the cause of the gunfight was not disclosed, Mr. Zanga acknowledged previous cases of violence in Bawku, suggesting a possible connection. He cited incidents where individuals were killed and others hospitalized, leading to heightened tensions in the area.

Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, contradicted the MCE’s claims, stating that eyewitnesses saw the young men being apprehended without engaging in a gunfight. Ayariga argued that the military’s alleged actions were unjustified, and he emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the matter.

Tensions persist in Bawku following the recent deaths, with conflicting narratives from local authorities and eyewitnesses regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.
