Reconstruction and Expansion of Accra-Tema Motorway Commences

The Accra-Tema Motorway’s reconstruction and expansion project kicked off on Tuesday, January 2, 2024, covering a 19.5-kilometer stretch with a 10-lane span from the Tetteh Quarshie roundabout to the Tema roundabout.

Supervised by Maripoma Enterprise Limited, a Ghanaian-owned construction company, the initiative was announced by the Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Attah, during a tour of road projects in Accra.

The Minister and his team visited ongoing drainage projects at Tema Community 11 and 12, along with the Tema Motorway expansion project, where Mr. Amoako-Atta disclosed that the Accra-Tema Motorway project marks the commencement of the first phase of the expansion.

The subsequent phases include the stretch from Tetteh Quarshie to Apenkwa and from Apenkwa to Neoplan.

Assuring swift progress on the project, the Minister urged institutions with billboards on the road to remove them promptly. He envisioned a significant transformation in road infrastructure in 2024, anticipating the commissioning of completed projects.

Expressing satisfaction with ongoing drainage work in communities 11 and 12, Mr. Amoako-Attah commended the contractor for commendable progress and emphasized the need for contractors to engage with communities before initiating projects.

He underscored the importance of quality work, cautioning that construction companies delivering substandard work would face legal consequences.

Addressing concerns about contractors viewing their work as a favor to residents, the Minister stressed the need for value for money and urged contractors to prioritize the nation’s interests.

Confirming the completion of the Tema bridge, he announced that 50 similar bridges have been completed nationwide.

Technical Director of Raceg Construction Limited, Mr. Kingsley Attafuah, reported that work on the Tema drainage system, initiated in July 2023, is 80 percent complete. He assured Ghanaians of completing the project on schedule to pave the way for road construction starting in March 2024.
