Renewed Violence Claims Another Life in Oti Region’s Nkwanta Amid Ongoing Unrest

Curfew Imposed as Land and Chieftaincy Dispute Continues to Escalate

A recent shooting incident in Nkwanta, Oti Region, has claimed the life of another individual, marking an escalation in the ongoing disturbances that have plagued the area for the past few weeks. The region, described as a hotbed of conflicts, has witnessed at least 12 fatalities, leading to the imposition of a curfew.

Persistent Land and Chieftaincy-Related Unrest

The recent fatality is part of the persisting unrest believed to be rooted in land and chieftaincy disputes. The situation has prompted security measures, including the imposition of a curfew, to maintain order. The disturbances have sparked concerns as Chairman of the Municipal Security Council, Bright Lenwah, highlighted plans to enhance security following the evolving dynamics of the conflict.

Security Council Chairman’s Insights

Chairman Lenwah revealed that clashes between ethnic groups in and around Nkwanta began approximately two months ago, primarily centered within the town. However, recent investigations indicate a shift in the conflict’s pattern. The increased security presence in the town has led to a spillover effect, with hostilities extending to nearby villages and communities.

“About two months ago, there were some clashes between some ethnic groups in and around Nkwanta. Since then, these issues keep reoccurring. Originally, it was happening in the town, but due to the heavy deployment of security, the situation has taken a new dimension. Now it is happening in nearby villages and communities,” explained Lenwah in an interview with JoyNews’ Peter Senoo.

The continued unrest raises concerns about the broader impact of the conflict on surrounding areas, emphasizing the need for sustained efforts to address the underlying issues contributing to the tensions.
