Subheading: Notable Departures Include Daniel Kwaku Botwe and Samuel Atta Akyea
The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary primaries are undergoing notable transformations, with seasoned incumbents making surprising decisions to forgo re-election bids.
Daniel Kwaku Botwe, the Member of Parliament for Okere in the Eastern Region and the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, has formally declared his decision not to seek re-election. Renowned for his dynamic and progressive leadership as a former General Secretary of the NPP, Mr. Botwe attributed personal reasons for his departure from parliamentary politics, leaving constituents eager for a new representative.
Joining the ranks of those stepping back is Samuel Atta Akyea, the MP for Abuakwa South, also situated in the Eastern Region. Atta Akyea, a prominent figure in legislative affairs, has opted not to contest again, signaling a shift in the party’s dynamics.
Atta Akyea took over from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2008 and has completed four terms in Abuakwa North (2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020). President Akufo-Addo, prior to handing over to Atta-Akyea, served three terms (1996, 2000, and 2004). In 1992, President Akufo-Addo was the NPP’s candidate for the area, but the NPP boycotted the 1992 Parliamentary elections.
There are also indications that Francisca Oteng, the MP for Kwabre East, may follow suit and not seek re-election, further adding to the notable changes within the party.
