John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has made a commitment to revive economic stability should he be elected as President. Expressing confidence in the skilled individuals within the NDC, Mahama believes that his party can effectively address the economic challenges that have arisen during the tenure of the current government led by President Akufo-Addo.
Addressing students at the Sefwi Wiaso Nurses Training College, Mahama underscored that a prospective NDC government, if entrusted with power, would diligently work towards establishing a solid foundation for the country’s economy.
He attributed the recent upsurge in fuel and food prices to what he characterized as the mismanagement of the economy by the Akufo-Addo administration. Mahama recounted interactions with drivers who, he claimed, apologized for voting him out. He highlighted the contrast in petrol prices, stating that during his presidency, a gallon of petrol cost GH¢14, whereas the current prices, he admitted, were beyond his immediate knowledge. Mahama attributed these economic challenges to the alleged mismanagement under the current administration.
Emphasizing the impact of the dollar-to-cedi exchange rate on fuel prices, Mahama argued that a well-managed economy would result in lower prices for goods and services. Confident in the NDC’s ability to steer the economy in the right direction, Mahama assured the audience that, if returned to power, his government would strive to improve the quality of life for the citizens.
