Speaker of Parliament Advocates for Chiefs’ Involvement in Active Politics

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has expressed his disagreement with the constitutional provision that restricts chiefs who hold leadership positions from actively participating in politics. Bagbin emphasized that excluding the chieftaincy institution from contributing to governance is detrimental to the nation.

During a meeting with traditional authorities at the Volta Region House of Chiefs, Bagbin voiced his disagreement with the constitutional restriction on chiefs entering politics, asserting that it contradicts basic principles of human rights. He highlighted the discrepancy in granting chiefs the right to vote but denying them the right to be voted for.

Bagbin criticized the constitutional limitations, stating that preventing chiefs from engaging in active politics hinders their ability to lead and contribute to policy implementation in their communities. He called for an amendment to the Chieftaincy Act to redefine the role of chiefs within the governance framework, aiming to address the contradictions created by the current constitutional provisions.

Advocating for reforms, Bagbin suggested modernizing the chieftaincy institution to align with contemporary societal dynamics. He emphasized the importance of state support in enabling the chieftaincy institution to fulfill its roles and contribute effectively to the country’s development.
