Sam George Optimistic as Human Rights Bill Advances in Parliament

Sam George, the lead sponsor of the Promotion of Proper Human Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, expresses satisfaction as the bill enters the consideration stage, anticipating a swift passage.

Speaking on JoyFM’s Top Story on Friday, December 8, George highlights the collaborative effort and support the bill has garnered from both sides of the House, expressing confidence that the bill could be passed in the next two weeks.

The Ningo-Prampram MP is pleased with the progress and hopes for a speedy consideration, stating, “I anticipate and believe very firmly that we will pass this bill and this bill will go through the third reading before we rise on the 22nd of December.” He emphasizes the Speaker’s commitment to expeditiously address the bill during the parliamentary session.

Parliament commenced work on the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021 on December 8. The bill, undergoing the consideration stage, aims to align with existing Ghanaian laws.

Previously stalled progress on the bill had caused frustration among its proponents, who accused some Members of Parliament of collaborating with pro-LGBT campaigners to delay its passage. George, in a press conference, criticized those allegedly influenced by pro-LGBT entities and affirmed the determination to advance the bill.

The bill, attracting attention both locally and internationally, seeks to restrict the acknowledgment and promotion of any rights of LGBTQI+ individuals or groups.
