Pru East MP Optimistic About Benefits of Barari DV Ghana Limited’s 15-Year Mining Lease

Member of Parliament (MP) for Pru East constituency, Dr. Kwabena Donkor, expresses optimism about the potential benefits of the 15-year mining lease granted to Barari DV Ghana Limited if managed effectively. Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, the MP emphasizes the importance of holistically approaching the mining of green minerals for the nation’s industrialization.

Dr. Donkor advocates for a specialized legislative framework, either through a Legislative Instrument or an amendment to existing mining and minerals laws, specifically addressing green minerals. He highlights the need to consider the by-products and their impact on industrialization, emphasizing that the downstream effects, if properly managed, will contribute significantly to the country.

According to the Pru East MP, the ongoing discussion about the lithium deal should focus on the industrialization and manufacturing aspects, ensuring that the nation maximizes the downstream benefits.

Contrarily, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, defends the mining deal, stating that it is in the best interest of the country and will ensure full benefits for Ghanaians. The Minister assures that all laws concerning such agreements will be followed throughout the process.

Background:

Ghana has granted a 15-year mining lease to Barari DV Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of Atlantic Lithium Limited, for the mining of lithium at Ewoyaa in the Central Region. The lease includes new terms to optimize the country’s benefits, such as an increased royalty rate, enhanced state and Ghanaian participation, and value addition to the mined mineral. The agreement follows prospecting, feasibility studies, and negotiations between the Government and the Company. Lithium, a key mineral in lithium-ion batteries, is considered crucial in the global shift towards sustainable energy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
