GUTA Advocates for Ban Instead of Restrictions on Imports

The Ghana Union Traders’ Association (GUTA) has proposed that the government considers a ban on selected products rather than imposing restrictions. Dr Joseph Obeng, the president of GUTA, emphasized the importance of achieving self-sufficiency for every country but expressed concerns about the counterproductive nature of the government’s intended approach to building the local industry.

During a media address in Parliament on Tuesday, December 5, Dr Obeng highlighted that success in other industries cannot be solely attributed to obtaining permits. He suggested that banning certain products would be more effective than imposing restrictions and impediments on trade during the era of trade liberalization.

Dr Obeng clarified that GUTA would not accept measures that impede trade facilitation and hinder business growth. He urged the government to address the urgent need for clear alternatives and measures that ensure the availability and affordability of locally produced goods.

Expressing concern about potential challenges if the country lacks the produce or if the prices are excessively high, Dr Obeng stressed the need for clear alternatives and the implementation of appropriate measures to achieve the country’s goals in the context of importation.
