A letter obtained by JoyNews has disclosed that an amount of GH₵95.4 million was paid for the upgrade of the Hwediem-Kenyasi road in the Ahafo Region last year. Newmont Ghana Gold Limited made the payment in accordance with a collaborative agreement with the Ministry of Roads and Highways to address the road issues in the area. The road was part of a list of deteriorating roads in the region that prompted tears from the Goasomanhene when former President John Mahama visited the palace.
Nana Yaw Gyimah, reporting from the ‘Building Ghana Tour’ in the Ahafo Region, focuses on the road in the following report:
On Wednesday, the Chief of Goaso, Nana Kwasi Bosompra, became emotional while discussing the poor condition of roads in the region.
Although the main road connecting Mim to the township has been awarded a contract, construction has been abandoned for an extended period. Expressing his concerns, the Chief mentioned the dusty nature of the road, which has affected his health. He questioned, “What is our crime? Ahafo Region, what have we done wrong?” After wiping his tears, he continued, “the road in front of the palace was awarded to Kofi Job by the NDC, and he mobilized his equipment to the site. But all contractors on Ahafo Roads were stopped immediately after the Nana Akufo-Addo government took over.”
