NPP General Secretary Urges Caution in Publicly Backing Flagbearer Candidates

Mr. Justin Kodua Frimpong, the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has advised party leaders at the national, regional, and constituency levels to exercise restraint in openly endorsing any of the four candidates contending for the party’s flagbearer position.

During an interview on Wontumi Radio, Mr. Kodua Frimpong argued that publicly supporting a candidate could complicate future relationships if that candidate does not ultimately emerge victorious. While he acknowledged the legitimacy of endorsing a candidate, he underscored the potential difficulties in offering counsel to another candidate after making a public endorsement.

Mr. Kodua Frimpong disclosed that he personally adheres to this approach, which is why he avoided allegations of bias from Alan Kyerematen when Kyerematen announced his departure from the party.

Frimpong emphasized his commitment to the overarching goal of securing victory in the 2024 elections, which is why he refrains from publicly endorsing any particular candidate.

The competition for the NPP’s flagbearer position includes four contenders: Dr. Mahamudud Bawumia, Mr. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and Francis Addai-Nimoh.

The NPP has set November 4, 2023, as the date for selecting a successor to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the party’s leader.
