Tory Lanez Seeks Bail Amid Surprise Marriage Revelation in Legal Motion

U.S. rapper Tory Lanez, who is currently serving a 10-year sentence for the 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion, has applied for bail, revealing a recent marriage while incarcerated, according to newly released court filings.

Legal journalist Meghann Cuniff reported on Friday that the 31-year-old artist is pursuing a motion with the Superior Court of Los Angeles to secure his release on bail. This move comes as Lanez appeals his felony conviction and the subsequent 10-year sentence handed down by a judge.

Court documents indicate that if granted bail, Lanez plans to reside in Los Angeles with his newly revealed spouse, Raina Chassagne, and their six-year-old son, Kai. The rapper intends to rent a home in close proximity to his family.

Cuniff tweeted, “From his sentencing hearing engagement announcement to his bail motion wedding announcement, Tory Lanez’s relationship status has advanced rapidly in the last few weeks. His fiancée is now his wife, according to the motion.”

A hearing is scheduled for September 5 to discuss the bail motion filed by Tory Lanez’s legal team. While Chassagne was initially listed as the mother of Lanez’s child, court documents now identify her as his wife. The exact date of their marriage remains undisclosed, but Chassagne was present at Lanez’s sentencing hearing earlier this month.

Tory Lanez, a Toronto native, was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with 305 days already served. Cuniff also revealed that if released on bail, Lanez commits to maintaining sobriety and refraining from any contact with Megan Thee Stallion or her associates.

“Upon release, Mr. Peterson will maintain his sobriety and have no contact with the victim nor shall he or any of his associates by his direction address her on social media or by other means,” Cuniff reported. She also highlighted Lanez’s well-known status as a musician and philanthropist.

Securing bail pending appeal is expected to be an uphill battle for Lanez. Legal experts, including attorney Michale Freedman, emphasized the rarity of such motions being granted, particularly in cases involving violent crimes like first-degree assault with a firearm, which Lanez was convicted of.

“Generally, to get bail pending appeal, you have to show a substantial likelihood of prevailing on appeal, which often means a substantial likelihood you can show error by the trial judge,” explained Freedman. “So it’s pretty rare for the trial judge to find the defense can make this showing about the same judge’s own rulings, especially after the judge has already denied post-trial motions raising those same arguments.”

Tory Lanez has been in custody since December 23, 2022, and is currently held at the Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles as he awaits transport to state prison.
