Medeama Striker Jonathan Sowah Earns Black Stars Call-Up for Crucial AFCON Qualifier

In preparation for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against the Central African Republic, Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton has included Medeama striker Jonathan Sowah in his 25-man squad. Sowah, the sole local player in the squad, has received the call-up following an impressive performance in the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League, where he netted 12 goals in 20 matches, contributing significantly to Medeama’s league title victory.

Notably, Sowah played a pivotal role in Medeama’s journey in the CAF Champions League qualifiers, scoring the decisive goal in their victory over Nigeria’s Remo Stars in Cape Coast.

Expressing his excitement about the call-up, Sowah said, “I’m very happy for this call-up into the Black Stars. Many thanks to Coach Didi Dramani, who taught me a lot at the Black Galaxies camp. It has always been my dream to play for the senior national team.”

Ghana is set to host the Central African Republic in their final Group E fixture at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Thursday, September 7, 2023. The Black Stars require just one point from the match to secure qualification for the AFCON tournament scheduled to take place in Ivory Coast in January.
