Twitter Spat Between Legal Counsel and Former President

A controversy has arisen on social media between Kow Essuman, the Legal Counsel to President Akufo-Addo, and former President John Mahama over the use of the hashtag #BuildingGhanaTogether.

On September 1, 2023, Mr. Essuman expressed disapproval of Mahama’s use of the hashtag in a tweet that criticized President Akufo-Addo’s governance. Mahama’s tweet aimed to emphasize that President Akufo-Addo had overseen actions that he believed had undermined Ghana’s democratic processes.

In response, Nana Akufo-Addo’s lawyer stated, “So incompetent that he couldn’t come up with his own hashtag. #BuildingGhanaTogether is the government’s hashtag. The picture is nice, but Sir, please find your own hashtag and leave our hashtag for us. Thank you.”

The hashtag #BuildingGhanaTogether, which centers around the theme of national development and unity, has become a prominent topic in Ghana’s political discourse.

This online dispute has sparked discussions among Ghanaians, with opinions varying on whether hashtags are inherently public and open for anyone to use or whether using a government’s official slogan without permission may be misleading or disingenuous.
