COP Alex Mensah Accuses IGP Dampare of Leaking Recorded Conversation in Plot to Oust Him

The Director-General of Operations for the Ghana Police Service, COP Alex Mensah, has accused Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare of orchestrating the leak of a recorded conversation involving senior police officers and former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bugri Naabu. COP Mensah alleged that the IGP not only caused the recording but also initiated its leak.

COP Mensah made these claims during his second appearance before the parliamentary committee tasked with investigating the alleged plot to remove the IGP. He suggested that the committee contact the IGP for the original, complete tape.

According to COP Mensah, his information came from intelligence sources. However, when questioned about whether he had verified the information, he requested an in-camera hearing.

The leaked audio recording revealed discussions of a supposed conspiracy by a senior police officer and an NPP member to remove IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare from his position. The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, formed a 7-member ad-hoc committee to investigate the matter, with a report due by September 10, 2023.
