NPP to Hold Run-Off for Presidential Primaries Following Tie in Super Delegate Congress”

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to organize a run-off between Boakye Agyarko and Francis Addai-Nimoh on Saturday, September 2. This run-off will determine which candidate will join four others in contesting the Party’s presidential primaries scheduled for November 4. The decision for the run-off was prompted by a deadlock between Boakye Agyarko and Francis Addai-Nimoh, both of whom received nine votes each, landing them in a tie for the fifth position during the Party’s Super Delegate Congress.

Professor Mike Oquaye, Chairman of the NPP’s Presidential Primary Election Vetting Committee, revealed the date for the run-off during a press conference held in Accra. The announcement was made subsequent to the declaration of results by Dr Serebour Quaicoe, Director of Electoral Services of the Electoral Commission.

Here are the results from the Special Delegates Congress:

  1. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia – 629 votes
  2. Kennedy Agyapong – 132 votes
  3. Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen – 95 votes
  4. Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto – 40 votes
  5. Tie: Francis Addai-Nimo and Boakye Agyarko – 9 votes each
  6. Joe Ghartey – 3 votes
  7. Kwadwo Nsafoa Poku – 3 votes
  8. Kwabena Agyapong – 6 votes
  9. Dr Kofi Konadu Apraku – 0 votes

The top five candidates in the congress were:

  1. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia
  2. Kennedy Agyapong
  3. Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen
  4. Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto
  5. Tie: Francis Addai-Nimo and Boakye Agyarko (9 votes each)
