Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has secured a resounding victory over Alan Kyerematen, even in what was considered Kyerematen’s stronghold, the Ashanti Region, during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Super Delegates Conference to shortlist flagbearer aspirants.
The results revealed Dr. Bawumia’s commanding lead, as he obtained a substantial 97 votes out of the total 121 valid votes cast, while Alan Kyerematen managed to secure only 10 votes. Notably, Kennedy Agyapong secured the third position in the region with 6 votes, followed by former Agriculture Minister Dr. Afriyie Akoto, who polled 5 votes.
The remaining contenders, however, failed to gather any significant support in this round of voting, except for one rejected ballot. As preliminary results continue to trickle in, it’s becoming evident that Dr. Bawumia has amassed more votes nationwide, with both Kennedy Agyapong and Alan Kyerematen trailing behind the Vice President.
The ongoing Super Delegates Congress holds immense importance as it aims to select five prominent presidential aspirants who will proceed to engage in the party’s primaries scheduled for November of this year. In the primaries, these five aspirants will fiercely compete to earn the coveted title of the NPP’s flagbearer for the upcoming 2024 general elections.
This unexpected outcome in the Ashanti Region, once regarded as Kyerematen’s stronghold, has set the stage for a compelling political narrative as the NPP’s internal selection process unfolds.
