Calls for Sanitation Minister’s Step-Aside Amidst Alleged $1 Million Theft from Her House

The Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has urged the Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, to immediately step aside for a thorough investigation into the alleged theft of over $1 million from her residence. Dr. Forson believes that such a probe is necessary for Ghanaians to ascertain the source and legitimacy of the funds involved.

In a Facebook post on Friday, Dr. Forson expressed concern about the potential impact of this issue on the principles of probity and accountability. The magnitude of the situation, involving an astonishing amount of money found in a government official’s private residence, warrants an urgent and impartial investigation, according to the Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam lawmaker.

Former President John Dramani Mahama also joined in questioning the conduct of the Sanitation Minister. He raised doubts about why such large sums of money – $1 million and €300,000 – were kept at the Minister’s home. Mr. Mahama described the situation as scandalous and emphasized the need for a thorough probe.

The background of the case reveals that an Accra Circuit Court has heard about the alleged thefts that occurred between July and October the previous year. Two house helps are currently facing charges for their alleged involvement in the theft, and three additional individuals have been charged in connection with the case.

The allegations include thefts of large sums of money in various currencies, as well as personal belongings of the Sanitation Minister and her husband, including clothes, handbags, perfumes, jewelry, Kente cloth, and men’s suits.

The severity of the allegations has sparked widespread concern and raised questions about the need for transparency and accountability in public office. The call for the Minister’s step-aside and a thorough investigation highlights the significance of addressing this issue with the utmost seriousness to uphold the principles of governance in Ghana.
