Assin South MP Denies Vote-Buying Allegations in Assin North By-Election

Reverend John Ntim Fordjour dismisses claims as false and calls for disregard of the accusations

In the aftermath of the Assin North by-election held in the Central Region, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin South, has refuted allegations that he attempted to buy votes by distributing money. The Deputy Education Minister took to Facebook on Friday to deny the claims, which were allegedly propagated by Joshua Akamba, the former National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Reverend John Ntim Fordjour unequivocally stated, “I wish to state categorically that I never engaged in vote buying, neither did I share money or goods before or during the Assin North by-election.” He urged citizens to disregard these accusations, emphasizing his innocence.

The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has already dismissed the allegations of vote-buying during the by-election. The opposition NDC, however, has accused the NPP of offering monetary incentives to constituents in order to secure their votes for Charles Opoku.

Richard Ahiagbah, the Director of Communications for the NPP, rebuffed the NDC’s claims, denouncing them as false. Responding to Sammy Gyamfi, the NDC’s National Communications Officer, during an interview on JoyNews, Ahiagbah expressed concern about the propagation of falsehoods by political parties and challenged the NDC to address the alleged lies spread during their own campaign.

Ahiagbah highlighted the NDC’s central campaign message, stating, “The central proposition to the people was that one – they [NDC] want them to vote for the NDC’s James Gyakye Quayson because the government wants to remove him from Parliament so we [NPP] can have a way to legalize LGBTQ in Ghana – blatant falsehood but that was their message.”

As the controversy surrounding the Assin North by-election continues, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour maintains his innocence and calls for a transparent examination of the allegations.
