John Mahama Promises to Appoint Former Assin North MP James Gyakye Quayson as Minister if Elected President in 2024

John Mahama, the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has announced his intention to appoint James Gyakye Quayson, the embattled former Member of Parliament for Assin North, as a minister if he becomes the president following the 2024 polls. Mahama praised Quayson as a development-oriented politician who has made significant contributions to the constituency even as an opposition lawmaker, utilizing his own resources.

During an address to Assin North constituents on Sunday, June 25, Mahama commended Quayson’s humility, respect for others, and strong faith, expressing his desire to appoint him as a minister should he assume the presidency. Mahama emphasized the impact Quayson could make in an official capacity, considering his accomplishments despite his status as an opposition MP.

In contrast, President Akufo-Addo has urged the constituents of Assin North not to vote for Quayson, citing concerns about his ability to fulfill his parliamentary duties due to an ongoing criminal trial. The President warned that Quayson’s legal troubles might result in imprisonment, leaving the constituency without effective representation.

Akufo-Addo underscored the significance of the by-election for both the constituency and the nation at large, urging voters to consider candidates who are not entangled in legal controversies that could potentially lead to incarceration. He questioned the practicality of Quayson serving as an MP from jail and emphasized the importance of electing individuals who can actively work to improve the lives of constituents.

The by-election in Assin North was triggered when parliament declared the seat vacant in response to a Supreme Court ruling. The court determined that the Electoral Commission had acted unconstitutionally by allowing Quayson to contest the 2020 parliamentary election without providing proof of renouncing his Canadian citizenship. Consequently, the court ordered Quayson’s name to be expunged from parliament’s records, declaring his election null and void.

The upcoming by-election holds great significance for the constituents and the nation, as it will determine the new representative for Assin North and shape the political landscape moving forward.
