Isaac Odoom, a 64-year-old charcoal burner, is currently serving a 12-month jail sentence at Winneba Local Prison for breaking into the house of former Black Stars defender, John Paintsil.
Odoom shared the circumstances that led to his unfortunate encounter with the law.
According to Odoom, he was misled by an acquaintance while visiting Besease for his charcoal business.
“I ended up being jailed for sleeping in someone’s house. It turned out that the house belonged to the footballer, John Paintsil. I had no knowledge of its ownership as someone else led me there. Initially, I was not informed that it was Joseph Paintsil’s house,” Odoom explained.
Hailing from Ajumako, Odoom had traveled to Besease to produce charcoal. Being new to the village, he relied on someone for accommodation. However, he later discovered that the house they had slept in was owned by John Paintsil. Odoom claimed that the house was abandoned and under litigation, emphasizing that there was nothing valuable inside.
After leaving Besease and returning to his hometown, Odoom was surprised to learn that someone had been arrested for sleeping in John Paintsil’s house and had mentioned his name as an accomplice.
Expressing his astonishment, Odoom admitted guilt to charges of trespassing and unlawful entry but denied any involvement in the theft. Unfortunately, he was unable to afford the GHC1440 fine imposed on him.
Consequently, Odoom was convicted of trespassing and unlawful entry but was acquitted of theft. He is currently serving his 12-month sentence at Winneba Local Prison.
